El crítico e historiador de arte estadounidense Hilton Kramer (1928-2012) y su relación con Joan Miró.

Hilton Kramer (Gloucester, Massachusetts, 25-III-1928-Nueva York, 27-III-2012). Crítico de arte y cultura norteamericano. Estudió en varias universidades: Syracuse (1950), New School for Social Research (1950), Columbia (1950-1951), Harvard (1951), Indiana (1951-1952).

Comenzó su tarea de editor en “Arts Magazine” (1955-1958) y publicó en 1959 en esta revista su primer artículo sobre Miró, y luego fue crítico en “The Nation” (1958-1965) y en “The New York Times” (1965-1982), y esporádicamente en otros medios como “Art and Antiques Magazine” y hasta la actualidad en “The New York Observer”. Fundó con Roger Kimball en 1982 la revista cultural “The New Criterion”. Recibió en 2004 la National Humanities Medal.

Sostiene una corriente formalista neoconservadora que rechaza el nihilismo que advierte en el arte vanguardista de las postrimerías del siglo XX y reivindica las vanguardias de la posguerra hasta los años 60. Su pensamiento crítico se trasluce en su artículo Does abstract art have a future? en “The New Criterion” vol. 20, nº 12 (2002), o en su favorable reseña Remembering the Gulag. “The New Criterion” vol. 21, nº 9 (2003), del libro de Anne Applebaum, Gulag: A History. Doubleday. Nueva York. 2003. 677 pp., que fustiga los excesos del estalinismo y del realismo socialista, en defensa del “arte por el arte”. 

Publicó libros sobre el fotógrafo Walker Evans, el escultor Gaston Lachaise, la vanguardia, la modernidad y otros temas.
